Yaw

(yaw) — rotation of the aircraft about its normal axis, the imaginary vertical line running top-to-bottom through the center of gravity. Yawing swings the nose left or right without banking the wings.

What it looks like

In a yaw, the nose swings left or right while the wings remain level. Unlike a coordinated turn — which uses bank — a flat yaw is a pure rotation about the vertical axis. This is rarely commanded directly in cruise flight; the rudder is mostly used for coordination and crosswind correction.

Yaw is the weakest of the three rotational axes for most fixed-wing aircraft. The vertical stabilizer provides natural yaw stability (weather-vaning tendency), which means the aircraft inherently resists uncommanded yaw — but it also means significant yaw inputs can require sustained rudder deflection.

The axis pilots fight: Most yaw inputs are corrections, not commands. Adverse yaw (from aileron deflection), engine-out asymmetry in multi-engine aircraft, crosswind landings, and propeller torque all produce unwanted yaw that the pilot counters with rudder.
